Yamaha Debuts XM Series Contractor Amps
September 28, 1999
Yamaha announces the expansion of the popular X Series
line of amplifiers dedicated to the needs of the sound reinforcement and contractor
markets. Making its debut at the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention in
New York, the XM Series is a multi-channel power amplifier available in two models-the
XM6150 and XM4220. Uniquely housed in one 3 rack-space unit, the XM Series provides
multi-channel convenience and a significant low-cost savings solution for the
consultant and contractor.
Ideal for multi-zone applications and the high frequency of bi-or tri-amp
speaker clusters, XM Series channels can be bridged to provide increased power.
Combining channels and offering 70-volt system operation, the XM Series can even
run at 70-volt as well as 4 and 8 Ohms from a single amp at one time.
"The addition of the XM Series amplifiers to the growing line of Yamaha
amplification products enables the sound contractor to choose from a wide selection
of tools to utilize in creating a complete sound installation," states Dan
Craik, product manager, Commercial Audio, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio
& Combo Division.
"The multi-channel XM amplifier provides a lot of choice in channel needs
and power, all in a 3-rack-space unit. For example; you can run power at 120W-in
all six channels at 8 Ohms; or 150W - six channels at 4 Ohms or, 300W - three
channels in Bridged mode (i.e. 1&2, 3&4, 5&6). At 70-volt operation,
the amp will provide 150W from three channels. Other combinations are possible
such as one channel into 8 Ohms, another into 4 Ohms, two channels bridged into
8 Ohms, and two channels combined for 70-volt operation, all from one amplifier
at the same time. The XM6150 provides selectable six-channel to three-channel
output as well. The XM6150 weighs 40 pounds."
The XM4220 powered amp provides operation at 170W - four channels @ 8 Ohms;
225W - four channels @ 4 Ohms, 350W - two channels in bridge mode (1&2 and
3&4). At 70-volt operation, the amp will run 350W - two channels. Similar
to the XM6150 amplifier, the 4220 provides a variety of ways to configure channels
and power levels and also provides channel selection switching for four-channel
into two-channel output. The XM4220 weighs 39.68 pounds.
Both models provide Yamaha EEEngine technology, offering extreme efficiency,
high- power output, cool running and low current draw. Since they are approximately
twice as efficient as conventional amplifiers, EEEngine Technology models can
deliver the same output but require only half the power.
The XM Series includes high-pass filters, rear attenuators, a parallel input
switch, XLR and Euro-block-type input connectors, and 5-way binding post output
connectors- all invaluable features for the contracting market.
"The XM Series amps provide excellent value at an affordable price point,"
states Larry Italia, national sales & marketing manager, Commercial Audio,
Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "We are confident
that consultants and contractors alike will find the amplifiers an extremely suitable
answer for their multi-channel sound system installations."
