DigiTech RPM-1 Rotary Speaker Emulator

July 14, 1995DigiTech is introducing the RPM-1, a vacuum tube rotary speaker emulator offering the classic sounds of a rotating speaker from a single-rack-space unit. Designed for discerning keyboard and guitar players, the RPM-1 blends the best of analog vacuum tube and digital custom-VLSI technologies for unprecedented flexibility and control.

The RPM-1's dual-triode 12AX7 preamp provides a natural warmth as well as an expressive distortion when overdriven. The DRIVE control on the front panel allows the user to dial in just the level of distortion desired. To retain the authenticity of the sound, the RPM-1 emulates the sonic characteristics of the large cabinet and horn driver while using the same crossover frequency and slope found on original '50s rotary speaker systems.

The RPM-1 also effectively emulates the natural Doppler (volume and pitch modulation) effect of a rotating speaker due to DigiTech's advancements in pitch-shifting. Two independent pitch-shifters allow the horn and rotor to change speeds at different rates and the front-panel HORN SPEED and ROTOR ACCELERATION controls provide the same function as choosing different drive size pulleys on original rotary speaker cabinets.

The SPREAD control provides control over two virtual microphones on the horn. Up to 180 degrees of microphone separation can be achieved--similar to positioning mics on either side of the cabinet. The user can choose mono or stereo mix outputs, or they can connect to separate outputs for left horn, right horn and rotor for individual processing.

Backlit buttons allow direct control of SPEED (fast/slow), BRAKE and BYPASS. For remote control, the RPM-1 includes a three-button footswitch. It also provides new levels of expressiveness by allowing the user to fine tune speed on the fly with a standard volume pedal. When connected to the CONTINUOUS CONTROLLER input on the rear panel, a volume pedal allows the user to sweep the rotational speed up or down.

The RPM-1 is housed in a sturdy, single-rack-space metal case. The transformer and power supply are built-in for years of trouble-free operation, eliminat ing the need for a "wall wart". The RPM- 1 offers a dynamic range of greater than 90 dB, "A" weighted, and is available for a suggested list price of $569.95.
