January 1, 1997

Propellerhead Software unveils its latest creation, the ReBirth RB-338 Techno Micro Composer. ReBirth is an all-software rendition of the vintage synthesizer classics TR-808 and TB-303. It allows any user with a Macintosh or PC computer to create music with true techno and "acid" sounds.

The sound of the TB-303 "bass line" and TR-808 drum machine have become an integral part of many styles of 90's music: techno, acid, trance, euro disco, hip hop and others. The problem is that the original items have not been manufactured since the mid 80's, and second hand units command astronomical prices. Furthermore, the original designs use old analog technology which makes them fragile and hard to integrate into a modern studio environment.

The ReBirth RB-338 "software studio" comprises not one, but two complete 303s, an 808, a distortion unit (dist box) and a delay (echo). The units all operate in real time, just like their physical counterparts. For all practical purposes, the program replaces thousands of dollars worth of second hand equipment.

Music is built by creating and editing patterns, which are then chained together to complete songs. All knobs and controls on the front panel act as on the original units and can be "tweaked" in real time. All front panel actions can be recorded and fully automated on playback.

The TB-303 has been the subject of many myths, most of them related to its sound. The most spectacular achievement of ReBirth RB-338 is that it provides an exact emulation of the 303 sonic character. ReBirth is in no way - unlike some other units - based on samples or digital recordings of the original. Rather, it is a complete software implementation based on a mathematical model of the actual 303, engineered from the ground up after extensive research into the sound of the original unit.

An important aspect of the 303 sound stems from the interaction between its built in sequencer (recorder) and the electronics that provide the sound. ReBirth RB-338 stays equally true to this part of original design, by implementing the programming methods - including the "Slide" and "Accent" features - just as on the original.

The program runs on any personal computer (PC: 486 or better, Mac 68040 or better) with 16 bit audio capabilities. It is easily integrated into any studio setup since it synchronizes to standard MIDI clock signals.

ReBirth RB-338 represents a major breakthrough in audio technology by transferring all characteristics of expensive, defunct, analog hardware into a software only implementation. But most importantly, it puts the true techno sound within reach of any musician.

The program will be available in the first quarter of 1997.
