Audio-Technica AT-MX351 SmartMixer®
January 1, 1997An ideal tool for sound contractors and broadcasters alike, the new Audio-Technica AT-MX351 SmartMixer® is a microprocessor-controlled, automatic-switching five-channel mixer delivering fast, quiet and incredibly "smart" performance. Perfect for teleconferencing, worship services, meetings, seminars and for use in broadcast and A/V studios, the AT-MX351's simplicity and unique abilities make it ideal as the hands-free heart of many sound or recording systems.
The single-rack-space AT-MX351 is equipped with four mic/line inputs, complete with automatic threshold adjustment to compensate for varying background noise levels, as well as a single Aux In to accommodate tape or other audio inputs. Each mic/line channel features individually-switchable 48V phantom power as well as selectable limiting to prevent overloads.
The most versatile SmartMixer to date, additional new features include: balanced inputs and outputs, mic and line level; pre- or post-controller outputs from mic/line channels; Sub-D connector for TTL output (which can control speaker switching, camera selection, etc.), plus closure-control input for external control of each channel; switchable NOMA operation; front-panel headphone output jack with adjustable level control; and an internal AC supply.
As with previous SmartMixer® models, all switching between channels is controlled via a digital microprocessor for instant and completely transparent operation. Other familiar amenities include: a transformerless input topology to minimize noise; switchable mic/line inputs and outputs; master gain control; RMS/peak meter functions; and a manual mode switch that allows the unit to function as a conventional mixer.
Each mic/line channel on the AT-MX351 has its own priority pre-select switch. If all priority switches are "off," the SmartMixer opens one mic at a time, switching to the next one only once the controlling channel becomes silent. When a single channel is set to the "on" priority, that microphone has the ability to override all other microphones, an option particularly useful for moderators. When all channels are set to the "on" priority, no mic will be locked out.
Regardless of the priority switch settings, all microphones not in use are attenuated by the mixer. However, the last microphone to be used remains active so that ambient sound is always heard through the system, eliminating "dead air." By keeping open channels to a minimum, the SmartMixer automatically reduces background noise and other disturbances.
Using the provided link cable, any number of SmartMixers may be cascaded to create a system for large seminars or legislative bodies. The priority control system extends throughout the entire chain.
