March 28, 1998Portable, stylish and loaded with state-of-the-art functions and features, the new PK7 and PK5 from Generalmusic are both ideal portable keyboard choices for modern musicians.
Featuring 61 keys with dynamics, both keyboards are 16-part multi-timbral instruments with 32-note polyphony, programmable split point and ability to layer two sounds. The PK7 contains 384 PCM sounds, including 16 drum kits, while the PK5 has 256 sounds and eight drum kits. Both models feature stereo 6W + 6W amplification with two full-range 4-inch speakers, a pitch bend wheel capable of altering the pitch ±12 semitones and a large multifunction LCD screen that is backlit for easy viewing even in low-light environments.
The PK7 and PK5 each contain two digital processors with 22 reverbs and 22 modulation effects, with controls for the main level plus separate send levels for each track. The PK7 contains 96 styles with four variations each (96 styles x 2 variations for the PK5), made up of five tracks (drums, bass, acc. 1/2/3) plus eight user styles. Every style offers 10 ‘Single Touch Play’ presets, enabling musicians to choose from 10 different sound setups for each style (sounds, volumes, effects sends, etc.) with a single touch.
Both PK Series instruments are equipped with a practical sequencer, perfect for composing and recording songs instantly using the internal style patterns. The PK5 can store four songs, while the PK7 can hold up to seven. The PK7 also allows songs to be loaded and saved as standard MIDI files on floppy disks. The PK7 is compatible with Generalmusic’s own WK3 and CD series formats, and also with the international Standard MIDI Files format (type 0, 1 and 1 + Lyrics). The ‘Direct From Disk’ function makes it quick and easy to play back songs from a pre-recorded disk, while the ‘Play All Songs’ feature allows users to hear all the songs on a disk one after the other with the press of a single button.
A stereo output allows users to amplify the PK5 and PK7 through any external system, including home stereo setups. MIDI In and Out connectors provide links with all types of MIDI instruments, computers and other equipment. The PK7 is additionally fitted with a serial port direct connection to a PC or Mac computer.
An optional Audio/Video interface available for the PK7 enhances its multimedia features. By hooking any television into the A/V interface, the PK7 can display the lyrics of songs synchronized with the music in ‘karaoke style’. This interface also allows a microphone or external electronic instrument to be patched in, enabling them to take advantage of the PK7’s internal digital effects. Furthermore, new sounds can be sampled directly into the PK7 by plugging a microphone or other audio source into the A/V interface. These new samples can then be saved to a floppy disk, enabling musicians to create infinite libraries of their own personalized sounds.
