SPL DeEsser PlugIn for VST/DirectX

May 27, 1998The SPL De-Esser is a highly specialized audio PlugIn for reducing sibilance in speech and singing, at the same time leaving the original character of the signal untouched. Furthermore SPL has developed a new circuit design which combines ease of use with natural sounding and effective performance.

The Auto Dynamic De-Esser scans the frequency spectrum and automatically hones in on s-Frequencies. Only these narrow-band frequencies are processed and adjacent frequencies are left untouched. The high quality algorithm reduces s-frequencies by feeding a phase inverted signal of the detected narrow band s-frequency back into the signal path. The s-Frequency is damped.

Compared with traditional De-Esser concepts, using compressor technology which sometimes drownes the voice in noise, or adds a lisp-effect, the quality of de-essing is significantly improved - the result is neutrality of sound and an unobtrusive but very effective mode of operation. There are almost no negative side effects on the timbre and character of the voice, even while using a high intensity of s-Reduction. Additionally the Auto Dynamic De-Esser offers extremely fast handling: all you have to do is decide how much de-essing is needed. The controls are limited to s-reduction and male/female-switch.

SPL DeEsser is distributed worldwide by Steinberg and available from June, 98 for USD 199.
