Guillemot Launches Fortissimo PCI Sound Card

August 27, 1999

Guillemot's new PCI audio accelerator, the Maxi Sound Fortissimo(TM), is a four-channel sound board with digital output, powered by the latest Yamaha synth engine.

The Maxi Sound Fortissimo features the very first processor to accelerate DirectMusic(TM) in hardware. DirectMusic is Microsoft's new API, and provides digital sound fidelity and 3D audio gaming. Music aficionados can create and edit their own music with Sonic Foundry's ACID DJ music software, and can also connect their hi-fi systems to make their own digital recordings with mini-disc or digital recorders, utilizing the Fortissimo's digital output.

The Maxi Sound Fortissimo offers:

  • An S/PDIF digital output with optical connector
  • True full duplex playback and capture with different sampling rates.
  • A built-in music synthesizer with a 2MB 64-voice XG hardware wavetable
  • 676 instrument sounds, 21 drum kits as well as an effects processor
  • 100% Plug & Play -step-by-step photo-illustrated guide for easy installation

Moreover, users can set up a PC home theater with four speakers and enjoy a immersive stereo 3D sound experience, or use only two speakers, thanks to the two independent stereo outputs. Legacy audio compatibility provides support for older DOS games, and the Maxi Sound Fortissimo is also compatible with most widely used Windows® 95/98 digital audio/MIDI applications such as Cubase(TM), Cakewalk(TM) and DLS format. The Fortissimo card also supports Direct Sound(TM) 3D as a hardware accelerator, A3D(TM) and EAX(TM) APIs, and Sensaura 3D Positional, as well as all open standards including industry-standard two-speaker and multi-speaker 3D audio.

Pricing and Availability

The Maxi Sound Fortissimo will hit North American retail shelves in September of 1999 and will sell for $49.99.
