Leveraging the phenomenal success of the ground-breaking 2408 hard disk recording system, Mark of the Unicorn, Inc. (MOTU) has enhanced the analog section of the 2408 by adding 24-bit converters and balanced +4/–10 quarter-inch (TRS) connectors. The enhanced version, named the 2408mkII, replaces the original 2408 and is now shipping at the same price. The 2408mkII can still accommodate unbalanced input signals via software boost or individual, user-configurable jumpers for the 2408mkII’s eight analog inputs.

“The 2408mkII offers stunning, 24-bit analog recording at the same incredible price as the original 2408,” said Jim Cooper, MOTU’s marketing director. “And the 2408’s analog section is now more flexible, as it can accommodate balanced or unbalanced inputs at either +4 dB or -10 dB. A year and a half after it first shipped, the 2408 still stands as an unrivaled, break-through hard disk recording system, and we feel that these improvements to the analog section will keep the 2408 way out in front of any other similar products.”

The 2408mkII ships from the factory configured with +4 “line-level” analog inputs and outputs. The eight analog inputs have individual, user-configurable jumpers that add 10 dB of gain to accommodate unbalanced -10 dB signals, which are typically produced by synthesizers, samplers, drum machines and other common audio sources. As a more convenient alternative, users can boost input levels via the 2408mkII’s included CueMix console software, which can add 6 or 12 dB of boost per channel via software without the need to modify circuit board jumpers.

The 2408mkII includes 3 banks of ADAT optical I/O (24 channels), 3 banks of Tascam TDIF digital I/O (24 channels), stereo S/PDIF in/out, an extra S/PDIF out, and balanced quarter-inch main outs. All digital inputs and outputs pass a full 24 bits. The 2408mkII offers 24 channels of simultaneous I/O expandable to 72 channels. Wave, ASIO, and Sound Manager drivers are included for compatibility with all major audio software applications for Macintosh and Windows. The 2408mkII can resolve with other digital audio devices via word clock in/out, and sample-accurate synchronization is provided for both Alesis ADATs and Tascam DA-88s (with the aid of the Tascam sync capabilities of the MOTU Digital Timepiece A/V synchronizer).

The 2408mkII is available both as a core system (includes the PCI-324 audio card and AudioDesk™ workstation software) and as an expansion I/O for any MOTU 2408, 1224, or 24i core system. The 2408mkII is 100% compatible with original 2408 systems.

The 2408mkII is available now. Core system price remains $995. Expansion I/O price remains $695.
