May 28, 2000Gibson's Custom, Art, Historic division and New Line Cinema announced today that
they will auction a two-of-a-kind Austin Powers/Gibson custom guitar to promote the
June 4th TBS Superstation world broadcast premiere of Austin Powers:
International Man of Mystery. The auction will begin June 4 at auction.newline.com.
Collectible instruments such as this generally sell at auction for more than
$10,000.00.
The guitar, a hand crafted Gibson ES-335, will be signed on the pick guard by Mike
Myers, creator and star of the two hit Austin Powers movies. The specially made ES
335 "Mojo" features a psychedelic twist on the traditional Gibson sunburst finish.
The guitar is overlaid with an offset spiral pattern that is decked out with a jewel-cut,
hand-inlaid "star and cloud" acrylic pattern on the body and neck.
Gibson CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, said "We're pretty excited working with New Line
on these guitars not only because they're cool and fun, but they are a fantastic
instrument as well. Like Austin Powers, Gibson guitars are icons of the 60s, so I'm
confident that any fan of Austin Powers and music in general could not do any better
than to get what will certainly amount to a very valuable guitar," he added.
Neither Gibson nor New Line are strangers to high end collectible sales. Gibson's
Custom, Art & Historic Division's vintage and one-of-a kind new models have
commanded upwards of $100,000.00 to collectors, while New Line Cinema's highly
successful auction site, auction.newline.com has auctioned off hundreds of genuine
props and movie collectibles, including Felicity Shagwell's Corvette from Austin
Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. The corvette sold for $121,000. A portion of all
items auctioned on the site is donated to charity.
"New Line's auction site has become a favorite destination for everyday film fans and
serious memorabilia hunters who are looking to add unique, one-of-a-kind items to
their collections," said Jim Rosenthal, President of New Line New Media. "Our
customers return to our site time and again because they know we will offer signature
items like this rare Gibson guitar. We are thrilled to be able to work with Gibson to
auction this fun and valuable guitar."
Once opening bidding is accepted on June 4th at auction.newline.com, the auction will
run for two weeks. More information and pictures of the guitar are available at the
New Line site. TBS Superstation will present the network television premiere of the original Austin Powers: International
Man of Mystery at 8 PM/ET on June 4th. The film will be followed by an encore performance at 10PM.
