September 14, 2000ASIO device drivers, currently available for the majority of high quality soundcards, allow recording and playback with latencies much lower than with standard Windows drivers. With such low latencies, actions such as adjusting tracks volumes or the parameters of an effect plug-ins result in an almost immediate audible effect, making the program act much like a hardware mixing console.
Small latencies, up to a few milliseconds, also make it practical to play an instrument through the program's live input processing feature. For example it's possible to connect a guitar to a soundcard input, add a distortion plug-in and record guitar tracks hearing the sound through the computers speakers. This setup eliminates the need for guitar amplifiers or direct boxes.
n-Track Studio 2.2 is a multitrack recording and editing software for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000, which allows recording, mixing and editing of a virtually unlimited number of audio and MIDI tracks. The program's ease of use makes it perfect for small studios, and for music hobbyists who want to record their own music.
DirectX and VST real-time audio Plug-Ins can be applied non-destructively to each track. Reverb, Echo, Chorus, Pitch Shift and Autovol DirectX plug-ins are included. Volume and pan evolution can be programmed by drawing on the timeline window. Once a song is finished, it can be mixed down to a wave file that can be used for recording an audio CD or for creating, using the built-in encoder, an mp3 file to distribute through the internet.
n-Track Studio 2.2 for Windows costs $39 and $59 (24 bit soundcards version).
