Summit Audio has introduced the TLA-50 Tube Leveling Amplifier. Designed for studio and live sound applications, the TLA-50 offers smaller digital studios a processing section that adds warmth to a signal, while providing a musical compression. In addition, the TLA-50, which has a three-year warranty, offers the sound of Summit's TLA-100A at a more attractive price.

The TLA-50 is a half-rack space compressor based on Summit Audio's classic tube circuitry. The input stage employs a 12AX7A/ECC83 vacuum tube to deliver its sound. This full-featured leveling amplifier offers three position attack and release switches, continuously variable gain and gain reduction control, and provides VU metering of output and gain reduction for precise visual tailoring of the audio signal. The TLA-50 also features a side chain insert for flexible use.

The output stage is a discrete component transistor circuit optimized for smooth and quiet response utilizing plus and minus 24-volt rails from the internal high-voltage power supply. Discrete circuits do not saddle the audio signal with the degradation and coloration of a transformer-coupled circuit as found in other products. The unit also offers the ability to link with another TLA-50 for outstanding stereo compression capabilities.

"We designed the TLA-50 to function with -10 dB or +4 dB inputs and outputs, so the TLA-50 automatically becomes a great-sounding, level-matching device for any application," says Erik Papp of Summit Audio. "It even has a bypass switch that still passes the audio through the tube-driven input stage, yielding that great sound only a tube can provide, without the compression. In every way, the TLA-50 gives that smooth, signature sound that says Summit Audio to the listener, and that literally means the best sound in the industry is now available for everyone."
