October 27, 2002

Otari debuted the IEEE-1394 ("FireWire") I/O Card for its FS-96 96kHz Digital Format and Sample-Rate Converter. The IEEE-1394 I/O card is a new option which allows users to send and receive multi-channel digital audio signals over an IEEE-1394 S400 network at up to 400 Mbps/second. The card supports Yamaha's mLAN protocol for the transmission of audio data and control signals over a FireWire connection.

The Otari ND-20 audio network distribution system, Yamaha PM1D/DM-2000, or any other available IEEE-1394 mLAN product can easily be connected to the IEEE-1394 audio network for digital signal transmission and routing. Installation of the option board in the FS-96 permits audio data conversion between IEEE-1394 and all the common data formats (including AES/EBU, TDIF, SDIF and ADAT) supported by the FS-96.

The option board, like the FS-96 itself, can handle up to 24 channels of 96 kHz digital audio signals. Synchronization between IEEE-1394 and other formats can be accomplished in a variety of ways: by synchronizing to the clock associated with the incoming digital signal; utilizing the FS-96's internal crystal clock; synchronizing to Word Clock input received at the BNC connector; or by using the SYT clock generated from SYT packets on the IEEE-1394 bus. This extensive input synchronization capability makes sync management straightforward and extremely flexible in a wide range of music and postproduction transfer applications. In addition, all the configuration options are conveniently displayed on the FS-96's LCD screen for front panel access.
