July 11, 2002New from Harm Visser are a pair of plug-in collections for use with the Korg OASYS PCI card: MorphingDrums and OAS7.
MorphingDrums is a collection of three new percussion plug-ins, developed exclusively for the Korg OASYS PCI. The plug-ins use physical modeling to create organic, fully controllable drum timbres, resulting in sounds not previously possible with traditional sample-playback technology.
The physical models are divided into two parts: the "drums" themselves, and the "excitation" which strikes the drum head. The drums offer various parameters for controlling pitch, resonance, and decay characteristics, and the excitation section includes various types of "hammers" and white noise.
As the name implies, MorphingDrums allows the musician to morph between two completely different drums in real-time, via MIDI controllers. In addition to morphing, you can create entirely new timbres by mixing the two drums together. As with all OASYS PCI plug-ins, all parameters can be modulated in real-time via MIDI.
The result is an extremely broad palette of sonic qualities; in addition to drums and drum-like timbres, it's possible to create strange, reverberant hits and special effects.
MorphingDrums includes 3 plug-ins and 27 presets. List price
is USA $20.
Inspired but not limited by the classic DX7, the 32 OAS7 plug-ins combine phase modulation synthesis, multimode filters, and DSP-rate envelopes to create a truly unique sound-generation engine.
The phase modulation sections offer 6 oscillators, combined into 32 different algorithms. Each oscillator offers 5 different waveforms, along with both fixed-frequency and ratio-based tuning. Glide and a global pitch envelope round out the frequency control. Finally, the amplitudes of each oscillator are controlled by six dedicated, ultra-punchy DSP-rate envelopes.
The oscillator output is processed by a resonant filter, switchable between lowpass, highpass, and bandpass modes. Dedicated DSP-rate filter envelope and LFO round out the package.
The user interface is crystal-clear, with block diagrams of each algorithm. Sound quality is naturally excellent, making full use of OASYS PCI's 24-bit processing.
OAS7 includes 32 plug-ins and 78 presets. List price is USA $50.
Demo version of both collections can be downloaded at www.zargmusic.com/oasyspci. After purchasing you receive the 'missing' instruments that are not included with the demo.
