Yamaha Drums brings the rich appearance and sonic characteristics of Oak to a mid-priceddrum set with the introduction of the Oak Custom drum kit. Shells are constructed of 100% Oak--a material known for its brilliant grain, strength and durability. The Oak Custom produces a distinctive, bright, and loud, yet harmonically rich sound for any live performance application. The Oak Custom will be available in April in 4-piece and larger configurations. A 5-piece set with hardware will carry an MSRP of under $3,000.

"The Oak Custom is an innovation in drum construction and is perfect for live performance," states Jerry Andreas, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums. "By using only Oak for the shells, it not only has a crisp attack but also has a 'full bodied' sound that can cut through and be heard, even if microphones are not used. This kit offers the trademark Yamaha quality in the tradition of the Maple, Birch and Beech Custom lines, with the added benefit of a lower price point."

Features include 7-ply, 7.7 mm thick bass drums, 6-ply, 6 mm thick racks, floors and snares with "universal" dimensions between traditional jazz and power sizes, resulting in improved sound projection. The 17-in. depth bass drums are available in 20, 22 and 24-in. (with PowerStroke3-type heads) or 18-in. (with coated Ambassador heads) diameters. Floor toms are available in 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18-in. diameters. Toms include Yamaha's distinctive YESS suspension mounting system. Newly-designed split lug casings mount with a single bolt, allowing the drums to resonate freely and deliver an open sound.

Kits are available in four matte (Sedona Red, Badlands Brown, Ozark Black, Natural) and three gloss (York Honey Amber, Blue Ridge Blue, Bryce Canyon Brown) finishes which are designed to enhance the stunning wood grain.

"Because if its strength, Oak is a material usually reserved for drum sticks," adds Dave Jewell, Drum product manager. "The Oak Custom has it all--beauty, sturdy construction, and great sound."
