Metric Halo has created a new version of their FireWire audio interface, the Mobile I/O 2882+DSP, providing 18 in/20 out audio mixing and routing with
built-in digital signal processing. With its ability to be powered entirely
from a Mac FireWire bus, the Mobile I/O 2882+DSP is a truly
portable, one-rack space unit that delivers a digital audio solution for studio and location recording, broadcast, and
live performance applications.
The +DSP environment offers users access to Metric Halo's signal processing
effects without sacrificing computer processing power. The
DSP is connected directly to the converters and I/O, features automatic
processing delay compensation and ultra-low signal processing latency, and
offers dynamic and instant instantiation of plug-ins. Flexible signal
routing and sophisticated patch and preset management systems round out the
features of the new +DSP version.
Mobile I/O 2882+DSP ships bundled with a variety of Metric Halo's
plug-ins, including MIOComp, MIOLimit, MIOEQ-6, MIOEQ-12, MIO
M/S Processor, and MIOStrip. Compatible with both Mac OS 9 and X, the
MIO plug-ins are now shipping with all Mobile I/O +DSP models.
Mobile I/O 2882 provides eight analog inputs, including eight mic pres, as
well as line and instrument inputs. The mic pres feature individually
switchable phantom power. The simultaneous I/O also includes
eight channels of ADAT digital I/O, with the best sounding 24-bit/96kHz
converters in its class, two channels of AES/EBU or S/PDIF digital I/O,
WordClock I/O, and 24/96 headphone output with front panel mute and dim. The
interface may be powered directly from the FireWire bus, battery or wall
outlet. A switchable high-power mode provides expanded output headroom when
powered from an AC outlet.
Metric Halo hardware offers many unique features, including MIOConsole, a
powerful and versatile 80-bit multi-bus mixer running on the hardware that
supports near-zero latency mixing and routing of all inputs and outputs with
scaleable expansion mixing and processing. MIOConsole software automatically
recognizes additional I/O boxes and provides instant and total recall of all
settings, including +DSP plug-ins, regardless of the order in which they are
connected.
The feature set of the Mobile I/O 2882+DSP supports a variety of
applications. The multiple inputs and outputs can be used for separate
headphone or monitor mixes, inserts, and regular I/O, in multiple formats,
including mono, stereo, 5.1 and 7.1.
For studio recording, the Mobile I/O 2882+DSP provides an
interface to a DAW, offering sound processing or simple file transfer
between workstations. Songwriters and engineers can use it to record and edit on the road,
in the hotel, while traveling, or anywhere that inspiration strikes.
Mobile I/O 2882+DSP is suitable for broadcast applications, too. It offers
instant playback of up to eight channels per box, allowing instant playback
of four individual stereo sends for music cues or sound effects. The compact
package and bus power features mean that the Mobile I/O can go anywhere you
need to work, and make on-site fixes or edit location recordings without the
need to send files back to the studio, saving valuable time before air.
In the live performance arena, in addition to operating as a remote recorder
for archiving performances or to play out backing tracks and musical cues,
Mobile I/O 2882+DSP can operate as a soft-synth mixer and I/O interface.
Mobile I/O is also a great addition to a live sound engineer's setup,
providing a simple and efficient tool for multi-zone analysis, and system
venue tuning with SpectraFoo.
