Event Ships Studio Precision 6 Biamplified Direct Field Monitors
October 31, 2003
The newest model in the Studio Precision series just rolled off the assembly line at Event's headquarters in Santa Barbara. Boasting many of the same features as its flagship big brother, the Studio Precision 6 delivers reference monitoring in a compact, small footprint
direct field system.
The new high-end model utilizes
a 6.5" mineral-impregnated polypropylene cone low frequency driver with a neodymium magnet. The use of neodymium gives the driver low distortion characteristics, makes it stronger, and provides it with a greater level of output efficiency--i.e., more output per watt--than a traditional woofer according to the company. The new LF driver is paired with a 1" soft dome high-frequency radiator that creates
an expanded stereo soundstage as compared to the company's previous designs. It, too, features a neodymium magnet.
Low frequency response in the Studio Precision 6 comes thanks to the model's dual large-diameter linear-flow bass ports - an Event exclusive. The port design allows for low frequency coupling into the room, low distortion, and improved low frequency transient response. In practical terms, this means that the Studio Precision 6 will reproduce percussive and bass instruments without introducing new overtones or artificially-hyped frequencies. The ports are front-mounted, allowing the speakers to be placed near walls without restricting the ports' air flow.
The Studio Precision 6 sports a powerful amplifier that delivers 280 watts per speaker (200 watts LF driver / 80 watts HF driver). The amplifier circuitry, which is custom-designed for the driver components, features low-noise semiconductors and audio-grade film capacitors, for enhanced dynamic range as well as lower noise and distortion. A toroidal transformer powers the amp, resulting in reduced mechanical and electrical noise. The unit also includes continuously variable low and high frequency trim controls, a continuously variable input sensitivity control, and a switchable 80Hz high pass filter--designed for use as a bass management tool in surround-sound applications. For easy connection, both balanced XLR and 1/4" inputs are provided.
