Denon Introduces DN-C680 Professional CD Player

July 11, 1997

Denon Electronics announces the introduction of its new DN-C680 professional CD player designed for everything from broadcast studio to post-production to DJ use.

Housed in a 3U black aluminum chassis, the DN-C680 sports a large jog dial and shuttle wheel similar to that found on the Denon DN-2700 Pro DJ CD player for fast searching and precise cueing. The jog dial moves through a CD frame-by-frame, or can be adjusted to move in 10-frame (approx. 1/8-second) increments. Likewise, the CD's index can also be scrolled through in single or 10-index increments.

For recording, an Auto Space feature makes it possible to insert a silent space of approximately four seconds between tracks. The Auto Edit function automatically divides the total recorded time on the disc in half and rearranges the tracks so they fit neatly onto the A and B side of a cassette. The DN-C680 features AES/EBU XLR outputs, in addition to balanced analog XLR and both analog and digital unbalanced RCA outputs, to provide maximum flexibility in recording or synching applications.

A unique bar-graph visual display indicates the playback points on the track being played. Elapsed time and remaining time displays are switched using the TIME button. The large, easy-to-read FL display also shows track number, frames, and can even display track name if desired.

The CD player offers an impressive variable pitch of +9.9 percent, adjustable in 0.1 percent steps, that can be changed during playback.

After a disc is loaded, the DN-C680's Auto Cue function automatically cues it to the point where audio starts, rather than where the track starts. Particularly important to broadcast studios, the level at which sound is first detected can be set to one of seven possible steps between -36 and -72 dB.

Pressing the END MON (End Monitor) button during standby instantly previews the end of the track, assuring a perfect "outro." Another helpful feature is the EOM (End Of Message), which flashes the PLAY/PAUSE button at the end of a track to provide a visual warning to the operator that the track will end shortly. Both END MON and EOM can be set to one of seven steps within a range of five and 35 seconds prior to the track's end.

Up to 25 tracks can be sequentially programmed for track-by-track or continuous play. In addition to the traditional Play mode, the DN-C680 also offers Finish mode. Available only when Single Track play is selected, Finish mode can operate in three ways: Stop, which simply stops after finishing a track; Next, which cues up the next track; and Rescue, which re-cues the track that just played.

The DN-C680 also currently features an FS Converter I/O Kit for 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz digital sampling rate compatibility, and an optional SMPTE Kit for supporting Video Sync/Word Sync and Sony Serial Protocol.
