Kurzweil Digital MultiTrack Interface (DMTi)
January 18, 1996Kurzweil Music Systems has announced the DMTi (Digital MultiTrack Interface), an innovative new digital signal converter. A
1U rack, the DMTi was designed specifically to interface with non-Kurzweil digital audio systems in their native formats at
selectable sample rates and full 16-bit resolution. The DMTi performs real-time data conversion between the Kurzweil K2500
Series "Production Stations", Tascam DA-88, Alesis ADAT, AES/EBU and S/PDIF optical formats. Additionally, it performs
real-time sample rate conversions which sync the DMTi's output to 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz and a variety of selectable external clocks.
When used with any K2500 Series instrument, the DMTi connects to the KDS (Kurzweil Digital Stream) port provided by the new KDFX (Kurzweil Digital Effects) option. The DMTi allows two tracks of digital multitrack, AES/EBU or optical data to be
returned to a K2500 Series instrument for real-time V.A.S.T. processing and/or sampling. This transfer enables the K2500 to
act as an effects processor or editing machine for the digital recording studio. In addition, the DMTi can output eight channels
of K2500 digital data to ADAT, DA-88, AES/EBU, or to one stereo pair of S/PDIF optical. Full 16-bit digital precision is
maintained throughout the system.
The Kurzweil DMTi is an essential device for digital audio conversion, even without the K2500. It acts as a stand-alone,
real-time sample rate converter, for example for transferring a 48 kHz DAT recording to a 44.1 kHz digital multitrack. The
DMTi's digital output rate may be chosen from AES1, AES2, digital multitrack, K2500, wordclock, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.
The unit simultaneously performs stand-alone data format conversion between AES/EBU, optical, and ADAT or DA-88 digital
formats. In fact, the DMTi is the first unit ever which enables you to convert eight channels of DA-88 data to ADAT format and
vice versa (requires two DMTi units). All of the above data conversions may be performed with or without sample rate
conversion. For more information about the DMTi, K2500 Series and other Kurzweil products, contact Kurzweil Music Systems, 13336
