DTX Electronic Percussion System
January 18, 1996
The DTX(TM) drum trigger module is the heart of the latest electronic percussion system from Yamaha. It features strong performance capabilities in live and studio situations, as well as an on-board training sequencer to allow drummers to sharpen their playing skills.
The DTX features a user-friendly front panel with large, back-lit LCD display, data scroll wheel, 32-note polyphony, 16-bit tone generation, digital filter, effects processor, 5-note stack and alternate mode, 500 sounds, 10 stereo trigger inputs, 4 outputs, auxiliary merge input, and trigger input attenuation switch. The system also accommodates our continuous controller hi-hat for playing realistic hi-hat nuances. Our cymbal pads not only respond like real cymbals, but can be choked as well. Other features include 4 front panel sliders for easy mixing during live play or practice mode, 16-step chain mode, MIDI In/Out, powerful MIDI capabilities, 32 independent drum set locations with independent trigger set-ups, Auto-set mode and headphone jack.
The drums pads use an 8-inch diameter quiet rubber surface, a sensitivity control for fine adjustment, and allow independent surface/rim play with choke option. The cymbal pads feature a streamlined shape, quiet rubber surface for consistent tracking, and the PCY80S allows play of three independent sounds or two sounds and choke mode.
The kick pad is made of durable metal designed in a tower configuration. It features a sensitivity control and high-impact rubber staking surface designed to feel like a real bass drum and respond with ease. The continuous controller hi-hat boasts the feel and adjustability of an acoustic hi-hat and the power to translate every hi-hat nuance when used with the DTX system.
Besides its function as a superior drum trigger module, the DTX houses a sequencer that is powerful enough for creative applications, yet is easy to use. The DTX uses 128 general MIDI (keyboard and bass) sounds to create interesting patterns and songs that are fun to accompany on the set. The DTX sequencing functions make it easy to record yourself while you practice and check your time against a click track. A solo mode allows the player to isolate a part of the drum pattern for ease of practice.
"The DTX is an interactive system that allows the player to groove with the on-board band and learn at the same time," comments Steve Anzivino, product specialist for Yamaha drums. "It also has powerful features for live performance and a sound quality well suited for studio use. If you look at all the other boxes out there, you'll see that the DTX has it all in one and much more!"
