DigiTech Vocalist Workstation
January 16, 1997
The new Vocalist Workstation from DigiTech is a four-voice vocal harmony effects
processor designed for use in both live and studio applications.
Utilizing I.V.L. Technologies' patented vocal pitch-shifting technology, the Vocalist Workstation can
produce up to five-part harmony from a single vocal input. The processor's Gender Bender(tm) mode
can apply male or female tonalities to the harmonies to provide the illusion that different people are
singing backup vocals. Pitch correction can save an otherwise great recorded vocal take by fixing a
bad note, while four-voice detuning can give lead vocals a big, double-tracked sound at a live show
or in ''one take" in the studio. Two separate reverbs can even be applied to the lead and harmony
vocals if desired. When using virtual tracks, harmonies can also be built then edited like any other
sequence data.
Not much larger than a notebook, the Vocalist Workstation is housed in a rugged table-top case
less than 1.75 inches at its tallest point and can easily fit in a single-rack-space tray. A large,
bright 4 x 20 character LCD display offers easy viewing, while a one-octave keyboard can be used
to enter key, provide cues for singers or enter commands. The top panel also features eight soft
keys, back-lit mode selection buttons and a data wheel for user input. Five front-panel sliders
control input level and output level, as well as lead vocal, harmony vocal and reverb in the output
mix. These sliders can be used to easily control a mix in real time. For hands-free operation in a
live setting, DigiTech's optional FS-300 footswitch can scroll up and down the program list, as well
as activate and deactivate the unit's bypass function.
The Vocalist Workstation comes equipped with 50 factory presets, which cover an extremely wide
range of musical styles, as well as memory for 50 custom, user-defined presets. Each preset is
capable of up to eight variations.
The rear panel of the processor features an XLR mic input and TRS 1/4-inch line input, with input
sensitivity switchable between +4dBu and -10dBv MIDI In, Out and Thru jacks are also available, as
are TRS 1/4-inch balanced outputs and a 1/4-inch jack for stereo headphones, with level controlled
by the output slider.
With a Signal-to-Noise Ratio greater than 92 dB, DigiTech's Vocalist Workstation offers
studio-quality performance at an affordable suggested retail price of $749.95. For more information, visit their web site at www.digitech.com. |
