January 29, 1998
TASCAM, recognized the world over as one of the most innovative manufacturers of professional audio products, will be showing its new MD-501 MiniDisc Recorder / Reproducer at winter NAMM. The MD-501 is a 2-track system designed for use in radio broadcast applications, live theater, concert halls and any other installation where easy-to-use random access capability is required. The unit features both RCA unbalanced and XLR balanced analog 1/0, a front panel PC keyboard connector port, a port for fader or event starts, an on-board sample rate converter and a convenient front panel TOS digital input in addition to the rear panel digital input. The MD-501 offers extensive editing functions, programmable fade in / out capability, an included remote controller plus Auto Ready and Program Play modes - providing a tremendously capable recording and editing tool for the audio professional.
The MD-501 can be integrated into virtually any audio environment you choose. You'll find both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR analog inputs and outputs. For digital 1/0, you'll find both S/PDIF RCA (electrical) and TOS (optical) inputs on the rear panel, plus an additional front panel TOS digital input. This handy front panel port is extremely convenient as it enables you to digitally access the MD-501 without having to get to the back of your equipment rack. For digital output, the MD-501 provides a S/PDIF optical TOS port.
The MD-501's sample rate converter automatically takes 48kHz or 32kHz data received at its Digital In ports and converts that data to the 44.1 kHz MD sample rate standard. This capability simplifies the process of transferring DAT tapes to the MiniDisc format even though they were originally recorded at other sampling rates.
The MD-501 provides extensive editing and playback functions. While recording to the MD-501, the unit's Digital Auto Fader function gives you the ability to easily create fade ins or fade outs. With the unit's Clock Display function, all recordings can be time stamped for easy identification and you can also edit your program material using the MD-501's Divide, Erase, Combine, Track and Disc Title functions. The MD-501's Program Play feature lets you program the playback order of up to 25 tracks while the Auto Ready function plays a single track and then enters Pause mode - all cued up for the next track on the disc.
For added control flexibility, the MD-501 provides a Timer Record / Play function for unattended operation as well as a rear panel 1/4" jack for fader or event starts. You'll find a PS/2-style keyboard connector for remote control of the MD501 from a standard PC keyboard, and there's even an included RC-5 wireless remote controller.
No matter what the job requires, the new TASCAM MD-501 makes your work easier. With a suggested retail price of only $1,299, this great sounding MiniDisc system is the digital recorder you've been waiting for.
