Korg Launches New NX5R Sound Module

Desktop-music synthesizer features Korg's critically acclaimed AI2 Synthesis System with an internal XGTM tone generator

January 28, 1999

Korg USA introduces the next generation of half-rack multi-media sound modules: the NX5R. It incorporates Korg's AI2 Synthesis System with 12 Mbyte PCM wave memory ROM, and an XG* tone generator board. The NX5R features: 96 voices; 48 channel multi-timbrality; 2,365 sounds; and 52 different drum kits. In addition, it fully supports XG and GM, and provides sound maps for GS* and the Korg Super-series (X5 tone generator sound map).

The NX5R has a built-in computer interface that allows connection directly to a Macintosh or PC-compatible computer. With its expanded polyphony, multi-timbrality and compatibility with most formats, the NX5R is ideal for music recording, multi-media, and desktop-music production.

The feature set of the Korg NX5R is truly extensive:

  • A massive library of 2,365 sounds: The AI2 tone generator provides 1177 sound programs (128 of which are RAM-enabling the user to store edit locations), 512 combinations (128 are RAM), and 31 drum kits. The XG tone generator provides 676 normal voices (programs) and 21 drum kits.
  • Multi-timbrality: the AI2 has 32 part multi-timbrality, and the XG tone generator has 16 part.
  • Polyphony: 64 note for the AI2, and 32 note for the XG (equaling 96 notes total)
  • High-capacity PCM ROM (12 Mbytes of waveform memory for the AI2, 4 Mb for the XG) for high quality sounding programs.
  • Effects: the AI2 provides two independent stereo multi-effects units (47 effects per unit), and the XG boasts three units - one with three types of reverb, another with 11 types of chorus, and a third which features 42 types of variation.
  • New high-visibility, intuitive, iconic graphical display interface with a 144 x 40 dual-color backlit LCD (which offers instant display status via bar graph display, knobs and sliders).
  • Line-in/out jacks which allow the sounds of other instruments to be outputted together with the NX5R's, without the need for an external mixer.

The NX5R is currently available, and has a list price of $725.
