Master Percussionist Trilok Gurtu Now Playing Remo World Percussion

January 28, 1999

Remo, Inc. is proud to announce the addition of world-renowned percussionist Trilok Gurtu to the Remo World Percussion artist roster. According to Remo's National Sales and Marketing Manager, Mike Morse, Trilok has chosen to play Remo Drums and World Percussion exclusively on his concert, recording and clinic performances.

"Trilok is one of the world's most innovative percussionists," says Morse. "His creative brilliance is exemplified not only in his unique playing style but also in the sound and design of the instruments he plays. In fact, in producing new instruments to meet Trilok's needs, we have been able to develop several instruments that we think will be of interest to a variety of contemporary drummers and percussionists. As our relationship with Trilok continues to unfold more of these instruments will be made available to the drumming community."

Born into a highly musical family, Trilok Gurtu began studying Tabla when he was just six years old. Trilok's travels took him around the world where he was exposed to Western musical styles which he was able to integrate into a world/fusion drumming style that blended elements of Indian, jazz and classical musical forms. This melting-pot of musical influences and techniques brought Trilok to the attention of jazz musicians such as Don Cherry, Charlie Mariano and Philip Catherine, with whom Trilok worked extensively throughout the 1970's.

From 1984 to 1988 Trilok toured the world with the highly respected jazz group, Oregon. While playing at a European Jazz festival in 1988, Trilok met The Mahavisnu Orchestra's John McLaughlin and for nearly four years was an integral part of the John McLaughlin Trio. During the same period Trilok performed with classical piano duo Katia and Marielle Lebeque. Most recently, Trilok has been busy performing and recording with Weather Report's founder, Joe Zawinul as well as with his own trio featuring Zawinul and multi-Grammy Award winner, Pat Metheny. A three-time Downbeat Critics Poll winner (1994-96) in his own right, Trilok's sterling performances over the past few years at drum clinics, seminars and festivals, including the Percussive Arts Society's International Conference as well as Modern Drummer's Festival Weekend has elevated the master percussionist to near legendary status within the worldwide drumming community
