Digitech RP100 Combines Amp Modeling and Multi-Effects Processing in an Affordable Package

July 21, 2000

DigiTech’s first product based around its proprietary new ‘Audio DNA’ chip, the RP100 is an amp modeling multi-effects processor for guitarists. Despite packing an extensive list features into a gig-friendly ‘stompbox’ chassis, the RP100’s most attractive selling point may, in fact, be its price, which is set at only $129.95 retail.

The RP100 pairs numerous vintage and modern amplifier models with 26 different 24-bit, studio-quality effects – up to 10 of which may be used at once. In addition to offering 40 factory presets, the processor is equipped with space to store as many as 40 custom creations. Effects editing is simple, with a maximum of three adjustable parameters, which may be controlled via three rotary pots on the front panel.

An on-board ‘Rhythm Trainer’ can play sampled drum beats in an infinite loop – perfect for improving one’s timing, rehearsing different music styles, or just jamming with friends. Guitarists can control the Rhythm Trainer’s tempo and volume level, as well as choose from a variety of different rhythmic patterns.

A chromatic tuner allows musicians to tune their instruments to one of four tuning references, eliminating the need for an external device.

The rear panel features a single 1/4-inch input, as well as a 1/4-inch TRS stereo output for connecting to one’s favorite amplifiers. An 1/8-inch stereo output comes in handy for driving a pair of headphones late at night, while an expression pedal input affords musicians real time control of many of the RP100’s parameters via an external pedal, such as DOD’s VCC1.
