With the new VS-840GX Digital Studio Workstation, Roland puts even more digital recording firepower in the hands of musicians—at a price that can’t be beat. In addition to its eight primary recording tracks, this feature-packed personal recording studio boasts 128 Virtual Tracks, four tracks of simultaneous recording, onboard COSM Speaker Modeling, a new JamTracks Zip250 disk, plus the ability to convert its audio to the .WAV file format for creating CD’s or MP3 files on a PC.

Like the VS-840EX, the new VS-840GX is a complete digital studio that provides eight tracks of digital recording via an internal Zip250 drive. However, the VS-840GX offers 128 Virtual Tracks via separate A and B banks—twice that of its predecessor—giving users a massive creative workspace for storing multiple takes and ideas. Its Zip-based format is not only convenient and portable, but also provides instant access to more recording time simply by inserting a new disk.

The VS-840GX’s onboard stereo effects are similar to that of the VS-840EX, giving users COSM Guitar Amp, Microphone and Bass simulations, plus an array of studio-quality reverb, delay, chorus and more. But the VS-840GX has been further enhanced with Roland’s exclusive COSM Speaker Modeling algorithm. This new effect, when used with the Roland DS-90A 24-bit Digital Reference Monitors, gives VS-840GX users the ability to reference their mix across sonic "models" of a range of popular monitor speakers, as well as on T.V. and boombox simulations.

Another welcome feature of the VS-840GX is its ability to convert audio files to the .WAV file format via the optional VS4S-1 SCSI port. Simply connect an external Zip drive via SCSI, and the VS-840GX will save its data to the disk in .WAV file format. Users can then insert the disk in a PC for creating audio CD’s or MP3 files to post on the Internet.

To make recording even more fun, a separate Zip disk containing new JamTracks is included in every VS-840GX box. The JamTracks disk contains audio tracks with complete musical arrangements and chord structures in nine different musical styles such as rock, country, and fusion. These tracks provide high-quality songs for jamming along and practicing in a variety of music styles. Guitar players can even use the drum and bass parts when recording their own performances.
