Sony Debuts Software Additions for Dynamic Digital Sampling Reverb

New DASK S704 Sampling Function Introduces Location Recording Option

July 23, 2000

The DRE-S777 Digital Sampling Reverb introduced by Sony Electronics last year is being enhanced with a diverse array of optional software, including the DASK-S704 Sampling Function Software and two CD-ROM-based Sampling Reverb Software packages: DASK S702, "American Acoustic Spaces," and DASK-S703, "Japanese Acoustic Spaces."

By utilizing the DASK-S704 program software in conjunction with the DRE-S777, end users will be able to produce their own reverb data that can be stored on the Memory Stick media that come with the software. The software features TSP (Time Stretched Pulse) signal generation and Impulse Response calculation for reverb data sampling.

"The DRE-S777 crosses over a lot of applications," commented Paul Foschino, marketing manager for the professional audio group of Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "Pros from within the recording, film and live sound industries have shown great interest in the system. In addition to the unit's lush sound and surround capability, its ability to empower professionals to capture their own ambience spaces makes it ideal for Foley, dialog and ambient replacement, and for live-concert remixing."

DASK-S704 key benefits include:

  • Reverb data may be uploaded and downloaded into a Memory Stick TM storage devices from the memory in the DRE-S777
  • Large capacity Memory Stick TM media (64 MB for about 15 stereo samples)

Following the release of the DASK-S701 software "European Halls & Spaces" in late last year, the newest additions to the DRE-S777's growing support library, DASK-S702 and DASKS703, offer a diverse mixture of pre-recorded spaces.

The "American Acoustic Spaces" disc includes reverb sample algorithms of well-known U.S. concert halls, studios and natural environments. Among these are Oceanway Studios in Los Angeles, Avatar Studios in NY, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Grand Canyon.

The "Japanese Acoustic Spaces" disc offers such unconventional spaces as the Goto Planetarium Dome in Tokyo, the Hotaka mountain range, and a bathhouse named "Tamano-yu," also in Tokyo.

"One of the original concepts of the DRE-S777 was that it would have a support library of various sampled spaces that would give the user a vast array of sounds and locations," Foschino reported. "The S777 is the most natural sounding reverb we've ever made."

Both the "American" and "Japanese" discs come with detailed documentation on the sampled spaces and an individually coded Memory Stick key, that allows secure operation of the sample disc.

The DASK-S702, S704 and S704 will each available in August at a suggested list price of $930.
