| Tama Swingstar & Rockstar Sets -- Plus One Huge Throne New gear for drummers with a big beat and a broad
er, base.
by Robert L. Doerschuk July 28, 2000
Tama figures that there are two kinds of drummers in this world: those who rock and those who swing. At Summer NAMM they had something for each. The third generation of the Swingstar set premiered with sweeping upgrades ranging from lugs to pedals, though the kit's shells remain mahogany. All components are available individually, as well as in two new "Fusion" kits, each equipped with three rack toms. Tama plans to keep prices for individual items and complete kits the same as on the preceding Swingstar line.
For heavier hitters, Tama's Rockstar kit now features a larger bass drum (18" x 22", vs. the 16" x 22" of previous models). Like the Swingstar Fusion sets, this new RP522DEF kit offers three rack toms, plus a 5-1/2" x 14" snare to go along with that big kick. All Rockstar drums feature five plies of Philippine mahogany sandwiched between an inner and outer ply of basswood. The complete kit lists for $1,499.99.
No matter what style you play, if you're cut from the Buddy Miles mold, consider parking yourself on Tama's new heavy-duty HT610 1st Chair "Sumo" throne. This formidable seat measures 19-1/4" from front to back, with a seat width of 17-3/8". Tama's press release says it best: The Sumo throne reflects the company's interest in "looking to support a wider customer base." It lists for $229.99.
