| Zoom PS-02 Zoom puts a studio in the palm of your hand

Size does matter, but in this case, the smaller the better. Case in point: One of NAMM's must-see items, the Zoom PS-02 (US$625), takes the idea of personal production studio to a minimalist extreme -- by cramming a complete guitar production center into a case small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. No doubt, even those musicians who can afford the most primo of personal studios will want a PS-02 for the road.
For a unit this size, recording is pretty flexible. The three-track recorder can store up to two hours of digital audio on a 128MB removable SmartMedia card. A hi-fi mode lets you optimize sound quality (though with considerably less recording time), and depending on available memory, you can record several "virtual takes" and choose your favorite for playback. You can also overdub, punch in on the fly, and bounce tracks.
But it's the combination of the recorder with a drum and bass machine, a guitar amp modeler, a tuner, and an onboard effects unit that makes this puppy our Hot Pick. The background tracks can be synced up to your guitar tracks, and there's even a built-in microphone for recording vocals or other noises. All that's left to bring along is your guitar and your imagination.
