Sony Launches New Wireless Mic Models/Frequencies

July 25, 2001

Sony Electronics today introduced a new generation of 800 series wireless microphones designed for use in a variety of professional markets, including live sound, theatrical, A/V installation, and electronic news gathering (ENG). Now available, new wireless microphones feature:

  • A camera-mountable dual channel diversity receiver, which offers greater convenience for ENG/electronic field production (EFP) users;
  • New high-quality handheld transmitters that accept five capsule options to cover a range of speech, live vocal and newsgathering tasks; and
  • 24MHz frequency block (equivalent to three 8MHz, TV channels) supplied in two base models (based on TV channels 62-69).

"These systems are designed to be extremely simple to operate," said Paul Foschino, marketing manager of professional audio products at Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "Each model has a set of pre-programmed frequencies that retain compatibility with existing `A' version 800 series products. There are also `B' versions of most existing products, including the WRR-855B SX camcorder mounting receiver and WRT-822B body pack transmitter."

Sony is also introducing seven new wireless products that are targeted at TV and video location recording applications, including ENG/EFP.

The WRR-862B is a dual-channel diversity receiver that can be used stand-alone or camcorder-mounted. According to Foschino, the dual receiver package is a cost-effective and practical solution for broadcast users seeking the convenience of two simultaneous RF signals on separate channels from a compact, easy-to-fit module.

Also making its debut at NAMM is the WRT-847B series featuring a hand-held transmitter with five optional modules suitable for a wide range of recording situations. These include:

  • CU-F780 - live music (wide-response, general purpose vocal);
  • CU-6780 - live music (for critical high SPL vocals);
  • CU-E700 - speech;
  • CU-E672 - shot gun, sports sound effect pick up; and
  • CU-F 117 - ENG interview.

"The enhanced `B' versions of our popular wireless microphone range offer professional users even greater flexibility thanks to their extended operating frequency range," Foschino said.

The WRR-862B is available for a suggested list price of $3,440, and the WRT-847B hand-held transmitter is available at a list price of $1,000. The five optional capsules, also available now, are priced as follows: CU-F780 ($310), CU-6780 ($550), CU-E700 ($550), CU0E672 ($515), and CU-F117 ($445).
