TASCAM has announced that the v2.0 software update for their popular 788 Digital Portastudio is ready. The v2.0 update offers 788 users several new features including WAV file import / export, larger hard drive capabilities and the ability to burn multiple audio CDs off a single session.
"In the past year, the 788 has quickly become the standard for small format multitrack recorders, due in large part to its user friendly interface," says Pat Killianey, TASCAM senior product specialist. "With the addition of the v2.0 software update, this makes the 788 hands down the most advanced small format digital recording workstation availability today."
Using ISO-9660 CDs, the 788 now supports WAV file import / export which will allow users to take recordings made on the 788 and work in other programs such as Pro Tools and vice-versa. The 788 now prompts users to burn multiple audio CDs from a single disc image - a great time saver. Previously users had to re-assemble the contents of each disk if more than one copy was desired. Additional features on the unit include the ability to use drives sizes up to 64GB with the 788 recognizing up to 4 partitions of up to 16GB per drive (the previous limit for a partition was 4GB). The v2.0 update also allows users to take advantage of features like "Import Master Track back into song", provides a null panning shortcut and an available time remaining "gas gauge" that alerts users when space and record time is running short.
Offering 24-bit non-compressed recording, the 788 Digital Portastudio ($1,149 MSRP) features six-track simultaneous recording and eight-track playback, with an eight-channel main mixer and six-channel sub mixer and eight-channel cue mix. The unit also features a 3-band EQ on each channel in the main mixer and two internal effect processors with available effects including compression, distortion, noise gate, flanging, reverb, delay, chorus, exciter pitch shifting, phasing, an EQ and a de-esser.
