Fender has announced its latest Artist Signature Series guitar, which is a collaboration between the company and guitarist John "John 5" Lowery of Marilyn Manson. Fender's Custom Shop is introducing two versions of the unique new J5 Telecaster, both of which are debuting at the summer's NAMM show in Nashville. Guitarist John Lowery began his transformation into John 5 upon joining one of rock's most controversial bands, Marilyn Manson. With an arsenal of guitar chops that span a multiplicity of styles (including bluegrass and country), he got his start in the mid-90s as a Los Angeles session player, working with the likes of K.D. Lang, David Lee Roth, Wilson Phillips, Rick Springfield, Rob Halford, Lea Andreone and Robin Zander. Earlier this year, John 5 met with the Fender to design a guitar that would become equal parts shocking, rocking and versatile. Featuring cutting-edge modifications to the classic Fender Telecaster guitar design, the new Fender Custom Shop J5 Telecaster appears to be a standard Tele guitar, vut a closer look unveils a shaved maple neck (for behind the nut bends) complete with a rosewood fingerboard and a custom three-on-side headstock bolted-onto a double bound swamp ash body. The J5 Tele guitar is available in two different versions: one with a Fender Enforcer humbucking pickup in the bridge, a Custom Shop Twisted Tele single coil pickup in the neck position and a hardtail bridge; and the other with two single coil pickups and a Bigsby-licensed vibrato system.
