Tama Drums gave the official U.S. debut to their new flagship series, Starclassic Bubinga Omni-Tune drum, at the 2005 Summer NAMM show. The new drums feature shells of 100% Bubinga, sometimes called African rosewood, fitted with a new lug system that allows all tuning to be effected from the batter side.
The new Omni-Tune drums are being endorsed by drummer's drummer Harvey Mason who has played with everyone from Sinatra to Seal. Commented the drum legend in an interview for an upcoming Tama ad about his switch to Bubinga Omni-Tune, "I decided it was time for a change. With the Omni-Tune system, you can get really fine-tuning so easily. The bubinga wood projects and works in very different settings."
The unique Omni-Tune Lug allows you to tune both the top head and bottom head from the batter side. The Omni-Tune system expands and improves on the lug system invented in 1930 by drum designer William David Gladstone, which he created for snare drums. With the Starclassic Bubinga Omni-Tune, all the drums feature the Omni-Tune lug, so the entire sets benefits from faster, easier, and more precise tuning, according to Tama.
Tama's Omni-Tune lug has only two contact points with the drum shell, which allows the 100% Bubinga shells to resonate much more fully.
As with Tama's Starclassic Maple and Starclassic Performer Birch series drums, Starclassic Bubinga Omni-Tune series drums are fitted with die-cast hoops and Tama's Star-Cast free-suspension tom-mounting system.
