Akai Unveils DPS24 Digital Studio

January 25, 2001

Combining Akai's legendary quality and affordability, the DPS24 sets a new standard for professional caliber digital studios. The DPS24 eliminates the need for complex multi-product interfacing by combining a high quality 24 channel recorder with a top-line digital mixer. Offering a host of editing, mastering, mixing and recording tools, the DPS24 is ideal for use in project studios, DVD creation, radio broadcast production and professional audio applications. With the DPS24, projects can be completed quickly and easily without sacrificing quality for ease-of-use.

Providing true 24 bit/96kHz, uncompressed high quality digital recording, the DPS24 offers 24 tracks of simultaneous recording and 24 channels of simultaneous playback with full fader and pan controls on each channel. The professional quality 100mm motorized faders feature Akai's proprietary Q-touch touch sensitivity capability. The DPS24 also features 56 bit, 4 bus internal signal and effects processing for lightning fast command executions and internal processing.

The DPS24 comes equipped with a large capacity 30GB internal IDE drive and users can link additional external SCSI drives providing the flexibility of recording cuts of any length, limited only by the size of the selected storage medium. An optional CD-R/CD-RW drive is also available, allowing users to produce professional quality CDs and cost-effective project archiving.

Featuring Akai's Q-Link Navigation System interface -- designed for quick, direct access to all major functions and providing easy access to EQ, Aux send levels and effects parameters -without the need to wade through complex menu layers. Enhancing the Q-link Navigation System are six virtual "Q" knobs located on the large, adjustable (320 X 240) LCD. "Q" knobs offer real-time control of screen parameters including EQ, effects, aux levels and more.

The DPS24's digital mixing capabilities are extremely versatile and include a total of 44 channels (12 input, 24 disk tracks and 4 stereo effects returns). Each channel offers level, pan, compressor/ limiter/expander, noise gate and programmable 3-band EQ with sweepable high and low bands and a fully parametric mid-band. Additionally, solo, L/R routing, and Group 1-8 routing are included on each channel. Graphic waveform editing features include Cut, Copy, Move, Insert and Erase, and sections of single or multi-track recorded audio can be moved from anywhere to anywhere within the project.

A Timestretch function is also included, allowing phase coherent processing of stereo recordings. Incorporating Akai's latest timestretch technology, this function offers a choice of 54 preset algorithms, providing an amazing variety of timestretch options.

The DPS24 also provides up to 256 virtual tracks, limited only by disk capacity. During mixdown, any virtual track can be assigned to any of the 24 physical tracks for playback. This allows the freedom of comparing multiple takes, experimenting with alternate arrangements, or combining parts of different virtual tracks on a single track -- without erasing or recording over previously recorded material.
