SP-303 Dr. Sample Phrase Sampler from Boss

Compact Sampler Offers CD-Quality Sound, More Polyphony and Effects

January 19, 2001

BOSS is proud to announce the SP-303 Dr. Sample, a low-cost phrase sampler for DJs, remixers and musicians. Based on the same easy sampling and looping functions of the SP-202, the all-new SP-303 takes things up a notch by offering CD-quality sound, 8-note polyphony, 26 killer effects, a realtime pattern sequencer and more. And even with this much power, the SP-303 still costs less than any other phrase sampler in its class.

Offering sound quality on par with professional samplers, the compact SP-303’s new "Standard" recording mode offers 31 seconds of mono sampling at 44.1kHz. Two additional modes are provided when more sampling time is needed, or when "Lo-fi" sound is desired. Sampling time can be easily expanded using optional SmartMedia cards; a 64MB card provides 33 minutes of CD-quality mono sampling. Once samples are onboard, tempo can be easily adjusted without changing pitch using the BPM control.

New to the SP-303 is an onboard pattern sequencer, which allows users to create complete songs by arranging samples recorded to the two banks of eight trigger pads (two additional banks can be accessed via SmartMedia). A quantize function corrects timing inconsistencies and works great for drum programming. The SP-303’s sequencer can store up to 7,500 notes in internal memory.

The onboard effects processor includes 26 professional-quality effects like reverb, flanger, delay, and Voice Transfomer—plus cool algorithms like distortion, filter, Slicer, Isolator, Lo-Fi, and Vinyl Simulator. Effects can be resampled to another pad, applied to multiple samples simultaneously, or even applied to live input signals—making the SP-303 a great DJ effects box as well. Three realtime control knobs and luminous rubber buttons make using the SP-303 simple; users can even import .WAV and AIFF files via SmartMedia*.
