New GEC3 Group Education Controller from Korg

January 19, 2002

Korg has released the newest version of its Group Educational Controller for use in the music technology classroom. The new GEC3 is a digital, microprocessor-based unit that interconnects 16 student workstations (expandable to 32 with an optional EXPIII expansion card) that can consist of several stereo electronic instruments, allowing 2-way communication between students and teacher with noise-free digital audio. Designed to offer the highest level of control for teachers and maximum flexibility for students, the GEC3 comes in a cost-effective and easy to use package that integrates seamlessly into a group education environment.

A special "Split" option enables two students to work independently on a single keyboard without hearing each other play, allowing up to 32 students to share 16 keyboards more effectively. By expanding the system with the optional EXPIII card, up to 64 students can participate in the class.

The GEC3's MIDI Out function allows the teacher to control the sounds on all student keyboards, and a flexible grouping function enables teachers to match up students for peer learning within groups of any size. Teachers can also store custom groups by class for easy reference, and students can always be selected by name.

For added flexibility, teachers can create customized teacher, class and student lists using the QWERTY keypad on the touch screen, or the USB remote control from a personal computer with keyboard and mouse (Windows 98, 2000, and Mac to follow). This information can be backed up on the teacher's computer or an inexpensive "Smart Media" card.

Easy to learn and use, the GEC3 uses the same advanced touch screen panel as the Korg Triton music workstation, along with the same pull down menus, check boxes, and radio buttons. Analog and Digital outs (SPDIF) enable high-quality recordings of student and group performances to be made on tape or CD.

The GEC3 Controller is currently available for a list price of $1995.00. The system's student interface boxes with headset will list for $199.95 each.
