Roland Takes COSM to Microphone Preamps

January 18, 2002

Roland announced the MMP-2 Mic Modeling Preamp at the Winter NAMM show. The MMP-2 is a two-channel desktop microphone preamp with 24-bit/96kHz A/D conversion . The MMP-2 offers features unavailable in any other preamp, including COSM Mic Modeling, four bands of fully parametric EQ, modeled tube compression, an enhancer, a de-esser and control software for a Mac or PC. Users can even download new effect plug-ins to the MMP-2 though USB.

The MMP-2 uses the same analog circuits as the acclaimed mic preamps of Roland's VS-2480. In blind listening tests, these preamps scored higher than far more expensive stand-alone preamps. The key is carefully selected analog components and new circuitry that separates the analog, digital and power circuitry for maximum warmth and minimal noise without coloration.

With 24-bit/96kHz A/D converters and internal processing, this futuristic preamp takes things to a whole new level. To start with, COSM technology creates the sound of vintage and high-end studio mics--the MMP-2 is designed to work with the AKG C3000B and four other affordable mics. Add the four bands of fully parametric EQ, modeled tube compression, enhancer and de-esser effects, and the MMP-2 offers a degree of sonic control that simply can't be found in any other mic preamp.

The two-channel MMP-2 can handle just about any recording or live sound situation with its assortment of professional connections. The top panel sports two XLR/TRS Microphone inputs, and there are two balanced XLR outputs on its back. The MMP-2 is also perfect for digital studio use--it has a coaxial digital input as well as S/PDIF and AES/EBU digital outputs.

The MMP-2's USB port serves two purposes. First, it allows the MMP-2 to be connected to any Mac or PC with a USB port for setup. Users can draw EQ curves and set the compressor--and more--using the included software's sleek graphic interface. Second, users will be able to download exciting new effect algorithms in the future as Roland releases noise suppressor, hum canceller, feedback eliminator and modeled tape saturation effects for the MMP-2.
