Sabian Launches HHX Evolution Cymbals Designed with Dave Weckl

January 17, 2002

Expanding its award-winning HHX, SABIAN Ltd. introduced the HHX Evolution, a range of drumset cymbals inspired by and collaborated on with SABIAN endorser Dave Weckl. Featuring the jumbo hammering; lathed surface; and raw, unlathed bell that contribute so greatly to the HHX concept of 'Tone Projection' -- a combination of traditional tone and modern projection -- Evolution models were created around Weckl's desire for his cymbal playing to 'follow the path of least resistance'. These Evolution models, with their glossy Brilliant Finish, respond to the slightest touch, making them extremely easy to play. An innovative 'Total Response' feature has been designed into HHX Evolution to boost sensitivity and eliminate the need for players to 'dig' the sound out of the cymbal.

Commented SABIAN vice-president sales and marketing David Via: "HHX Evolution represents a major step for SABIAN and for Dave Weckl. Together we've come together on this concept of cymbals that respond readily at even the lowest volumes, yet remain totally in control up through the dynamic range. Dave has a very accute sense of hearing and knows exactly what he wants from his cymbals. In addition to high-response sensitivity he requested a specific degree of separation between the brighter high-end tones and the warmer low end, for a sound that was both warm and cool. He was very specific, and this is why our craftsmen were able to design Evolution to such exact standards. We are extremely pleased with the results and anticipate enormous interest in these cymbals."

The range is based around Weckl's setup: 7", 10", 12" Splashes: 13", 14" Hats; 16", 17", 18" Crashes; and a 20" Ride. Two radically new designs have also been developed by Weckl and the specialists in the SABIAN Vault. The O-Zone Crash is a thin crash model performated by large holes. The sound is fast, shimmering, and quite unlike any other crash cymbal, though fulfilling the same purpose while adding an effect-like quality. The d-EFFECK is a thin/medium thin crash/effects cymbal with a turned-down edge. Available with or without rivets, it has the flavor of a crash with oriental overtones and is useful in many kinds of music. The d-EFFEKT is ideal for hand or stick applications by drummers and percussionists and offers a unique new effects option.

The logo stamping on the cymbals -- at 3 and 9 o'clock on the playing surface a smaller SABIAN logo on the underside - is keeping with Weckl's request for 'something subtle and tasteful'. A stamp of his signature is placed on the underside of the bell. Added Via: "Dave was very respectful of the fact that this was a collaborative effort."

Commented Weckl "HHX is the essence of what I was looking for. It has that warm tone I like so much, but it also has brightness in its high end. For me it's very important to have the right mix... a balance of both. And that's what Evolution is all about. It retains the low end, we've brightened the highs, and we've increased the sensitivity so that the lightest touch of a stick sets it off. But it's not just a matter of being responsive, Evolution puts out its total sound at all times; even at very low levels. That's what I was looking for: cymbals that offered the path of least resistance, so I could focus on what I wanted to play, not how I was going to have to play it. These cymbals 'breathe' and 'give', yet are very sturdy. They are 'airy' in sound yet project and punch through the band. The opportunity to work 'hands on' with a cymbal company has always been my dream."

HHX Evolution is hand crafted from SABIAN's premium B20 bronze, the most durable and musical metal used in cymbal making. They are protected by a special SABIAN two-year warranty.
