Yamaha SLG100N Gives Guitars the "Silent Treatment"

Practice and Travel Instrument Joins Lineup of Innovative Silent Instruments

January 21, 2002

A common dilemma faced by musicians is how to practice without breaking the landlord's rules, or disturbing family members and neighbors. Yamaha Corporation of America has been solving this problem in part with a line of "silent" products which incorporate cutting-edge technology into a growing family of traditional musical instruments--including strings, brass and percussion. At Winter NAMM 2002, Yamaha Guitars enters the silent family with the introduction of the SLG100N Silent Guitar.

Like its siblings, the SLG100N allows professional and amateur musicians to practice and perform in complete privacy, using headphones, but enjoy the realistic sounds of an acoustic instrument. The SLG100N carries an MSRP of $699 and will be available in February.

"It was only logical that Yamaha should afford the same superior design capabilities of the Silent Series to the guitarist," states David Bergstrom, director of marketing, Pro Audio and Combo Division. "The SLG100N should appeal to students who want to play at home or in their dorms, apartment and condo dwellers, and traveling musicians staying in hotel rooms."

The nylon string SLG100N features a streamlined appearance with a lightweight composite body, Mahogany neck and Rosewood fingerboard, and breaks down quickly for ease of transportation.

Proprietary Yamaha electronics include Piezo in-bridge pickups and an internal DSP which reproduces the natural sounding reverb of user-selected acoustic space. The resulting sound is a warm, full-bodied nylon string tone. An auxiliary mini-stereo input on the body of the instrument can easily connect to an external CD player or tape machine for practicing along with pre-recorded material. The SLG100N can also be plugged into an amplifier or P.A. system for live performances.

"The combination of modern and traditional elements makes the SLG100N a fitting entry into the Yamaha family of silent instruments," says Gary Cook, Guitar product manager. "It's lightweight, easy to play and can be taken anywhere."

The SLG100N easily interfaces with the recently-introduced Yamaha AG Stomp box, allowing the user to create pleasing acoustic/electric sounds with the unit's microphone modeling capabilities. Accessories include a gig bag, AC adapter and headphones.
