NAMM: Ashdown Intros New Hi-Gain Amps

January 16, 2003

Last year's Peacemaker 50 Class A guitar amp head took Ashdown into new territory. Now Ashdown is developing a new range of hi-gain tube amplification, the Fallen Angels.

Designed for a new breed of guitarist demanding a saturated, singing soloing voice while still retaining loads of bottom end punch, the Fallen Angels feature a clean channel with gain, treble, middle, bass and volume controls. But it's Channel 2 that really rocks, offering everything from big, fat bottomed tone (perfect for muted power chords on 7-string guitars), right through to screaming, soaring lead sounds.

With most tube amps, you only get the best solo voice when the output stage is working close to flat out which often means it's too loud, so some kind of power soak is used to get the volume down to more manageable levels. Trouble is, you then don't have the power you need on tap for massive, bass-heavy chords. That's why the solo voice character on the Fallen Angels comes from the preamp stage, so maximum grunt is always available from the power stage whenever you need it.

With visual styling unashamedly aimed at Nu-Metal players, the Fallen Angel range comprises of 40 and 60 watt twin channel 1x12" and 2x12" combos, a 60 watt head and a mighty 180 watt head using no less than six EL34 tubes in the output section. Channels in the 40 and 60 watt units are footswitchable, with a more sophisticated footswitching system incorporating LED indicators on the 180 watt head allowing the selection of channels, channel 2 boost, master volumes 1/ 2 and effects in/out.
