Drum builder Johnny Craviotto has announced the official launch of the newly formed Craviotto Drum Company. During the past two decades, Craviotto has become known around the world for his exclusive, handcrafted, one-piece drumshells and, with the development of The Craviotto Drum Company, he hopes to take more than just his business to the next level.
"Over the past twenty years, even while I was producing shells for other drum makers, I always had a dream of building my own drums," says the master craftsman. "The Craviotto Drum Company will give me a chance to create some pretty outrageous, truly unique instruments for serious drummers and perhaps make a small contribution to advancing the art of drumming along the way. It's really a dream come true."
The Monterey Bay, California based company is being launched with the introduction of four series of high-performance and highly collectible exotic solid-shell snare drums: 5.5x12", 5.5x13" and 5.5x14" Birdseye Maple with matching reinforcing hoops, 5.5x13" and 5.5x14" American Ash with matching reinforcing hoops, 5.5x13" and 6.5x14" Black Cherry with matching reinforcing hoops and 4.0x14" and 5.5x14" Mahogany with Maple reinforcing hoops. Due to the rareness and limited availability of these woods, only 250 sequentially numbered drums of each collection will be produced.
The custom drums all feature hand-selected, handcrafted shells and gleaming nickel-plated hardware along with premium-quality components, including Craviotto's exclusively designed "Diamond" Tube-lugs, Remo Ambassador drumheads and Puresound 21-strand snare wires. All drums also come with a heavy-duty, padded Craviotto drumbag. Options include a choice of heavy-gauge (2.3mm) triple-flanged, Vintage-style straight or diecast counterhoops and natural satin oil or high-gloss lacquer finishes.
As a drummer and drum builder, Johnny Craviotto has been involved in the music business for over 40 years. He began his professional career as a drummer in the early 1960's and quickly progressed to work with Rock 'N' Roll pioneers Ry Cooder, Buffy St. Marie, Moby Grape and Neil Young. In the 1970's, as Johnny became interested in the history of vintage drums, he began collecting classic drums and closely studying the art of drum building. Over the next few years, through extensive experimentation and great patience, he developed a proprietary process for producing perfectly round drumshells from a single piece of steam-bent hardwood.
Although one-piece drumshells had been made for centuries, they were often primitive and had been replaced by more consistent, more stable plied-drumshells for much of the 20th Century. However, while plied drumshells are easier and less expensive to produce, they characteristically lack the subtle sensitivity and tonal qualities preferred by top professionals. Johnny was able to integrate his traditional drum designs with modern materials and production methods to single-handedly raise the solid-shell snare drum to an art form and resurrect its prestige and popularity in the market place.
Since the mid 1990's, Craviotto solid shells have become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art for snare drum sound and performance. Today, as a drummer and drum maker, Craviotto continues to refine the age-old art of solid-shell custom drum construction-- building on his "solid" reputation as the reigning authority on the tradition. Drums made from Craviotto shells remain among the most prestigious instruments of their kind and continue to be used and endorsed by many of the world's leading drum artists. The perfect blend of tradition and innovation, the Craviotto name represents the world's most classic drum design in its most modern form.
