Nautilus Previews Commander Discrete Mixer at NAMM

January 23, 2004

Nautilus Master Technology was exhibiting a prototype of their discrete 8-channel stereo mixer – the COMMANDER – at Winter NAMM. Channels are summed to stereo using all-Class-A circuitry that enhances detail of instruments and voices according to the company. This fills the needs of Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) users who want to open up the sound of their mixes by summing in the analog domain. The unit also has a unique A-B feature for mix enhancement techniques - as seen in the Nautilus NEMO Series.

With panning and mute controls, the unit can bring "live" interaction to mixing or tracking in progress. Tracks can be intuitively muted and panned "on the fly" - adding the possibility of "feel" and inspiration to the once-set/always-set world of computers. For stereo-subgroup layback-to-disc, its Class-A circuit path offers optimum audio resolution.

In addition to side-car summing for any console or DAW, the COMMANDER has a completely unique feature - the ability to select an auxiliary balanced source (like a Masterlink or other CD player) as an A-B mixing reference. With its own level-matching control, the aux source can be easily and instantly front-panel calibrated. This ensures that comparisons with other CD/SACD/previous mixes, etc. are tone and balance-based, not volume driven. This feature solves the problems presented by widely varying levels on commercial productions.

The COMMANDER has eight balanced line inputs, two pairs of stereo balanced return inputs, auxiliary (B) source input, stereo insert send and return (front-panel switchable) and stereo buss output. All stereo pots are precision tracking and the on-board VU meters have range calibration controls. (over)

Nautilus Master Technology is founded by mastering engineer, John Vestman whose philosophy is to integrate mastering technology into recording studio equipment. Recommending A-B techniques as a way to easily gain valuable mixing insights, he states, "The COMMANDER lets you immediately compare any artist's best sounding production to yours, right on the mixer. The key is to level-match the different sources and switch instantly so you retain the sonic 'imprint' of the other source - then you'll really know how your sound holds up in the real world."

While the new concepts in the NEMO Series and the COMMANDER are distinctly Vestman's, the electronic design is by Inward Connections. Steve Firlotte's precision circuitry is coupled with the SPA690 discrete amp block electronics of John Hall, renowned designer of early Langevin products. The highest quality components are utilized throughout (no surface-mount components), all in a rock-solid 2-space rack enclosure.

The COMMANDER also includes a high-end power cord (retail - $365.00) by Virtual Dynamics, which enhances the definition even more stages Vestman.

Nautilus anticipates the release of the COMMANDER to be in Spring, 2004.
