PRESS RELEASE

Audio Pros To Benefit From Free Hearing Screenings At NAMM

January 09, 2008

House Ear Institute (HEI), with the ongoing sponsorship commitment from Shure Incorporated and NAMM, will provide free hearing screenings, hearing protection, literature and education to attendees and exhibitors at the 2008 NAMM Winter Show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The free hearing screenings are sponsored exclusively by Shure Inc., and available in Booth #1196 in Hall E between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 17 through Saturday, January 20 and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2008. A certified screening technician will conduct the screenings based on regulatory guidelines established by OSHA, and House Ear Institute personnel will provide audiology consultations and hearing health information. As an added benefit, the Institute will offer oto-acoustic emissions (OAE) testing and the Hearing-In-Noise Test (HINT) as part of a research study being conducted on hearing loss in the music and pro-audio industries.

The hearing screenings continue to be an integral part of the House Ear Institute's Sound Partners (™) hearing conservation program, made possible through the support of Shure's "Listen Safe" initiative, dedicated to teaching consumers and audio professionals how to enjoy sound responsibly. Sound Partners raises awareness among audio and music professionals and the listening public about the permanent hearing health risks associated with excessive exposure to sound volumes at or exceeding 85 decibels (dB), and practical protection methods to encourage the lifelong enjoyment of sound.

"Both Shure and NAMM are examples of organizations that really demonstrate their understanding of the importance of encouraging good hearing health among music professionals, and appreciate the benefits of placing their name behind it," said Marilee Potthoff, director of marketing, House Ear Institute. "Their commitment allows us, as a world renowned hearing research institution, to effectively serve the biggest single industry not regulated by OSHA, in which its professionals are exposed to high levels of sound daily and vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss."
